Can Cats Eat Peas

Cats eating peas

Cats are carnivores, and it doesn’t matter if you keep them as pets, they are going to eat meat whenever given the opportunity. But, I’m sure that you have also shared your food with your cat. Giving food to cats require some research because the body of cats are not comfortable with all sorts of food items, so giving them food that has a high salt or sugary content can harm them. You should know whether the food that is being served to your cat is safe for it or not.

Your digestive system is a lot different than that of your cat, and so, the response of your stomach to a particular food item will also be different than the response of your cat’s stomach.

The majority part of cat’s diet should include meat and a small portion of vegetables. Though there I no harm in eating vegetables, not all vegetables are good for cat’s health. It is, therefore, important for you to check all the food items thoroughly in order to make sure that nothing harmful is consumed by your cat.

One of the common vegetables that are being eaten at homes these days is ‘pea’.

Many people prepare peas, which they also offer to their pets that include peas as well. Peas are considered one of the healthiest foods in the world, but the question is whether they can be fed to cats?

Will peas are suitable for cats or are they going to do any side-effect on cats?

Let’s find out.

What are peas?

Peas are a small and round-shaped vegetable, which are very popular in the world. There are three types of peas available today, snap peas, garden peas, and snow peas. Out of these three, garden peas are most common. These are rich in Vitamin B1, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K.

Apart from these, peas are rich in fiber and minerals as well such as iron, copper, potassium, and magnesium. Peas are sweet in taste and as a starchy flavor. There are certain phytonutrients, which are present in peas, and these have many health benefits.

Are peas safe for cats?

Cats love eating peas, and this is the reason why some cat owners seem worried. They don’t know whether peas are good for their cat’s health or not. While peas are good for human’s health, it is not yet know how it would react with the digestive system of cats. A piece of good news is that peas are not on the list of toxic foods for cats.

Still, peas should be given to cats as treats and not in their regular diet. Peas have known to have a positive effect on the gastrointestinal tract of the cat.

If a cat is suffering from constipation, then peas can prove extremely effective to fix this issue. Many cat foods that are present on the market contain peas in them.

How many peas should be given to cats?

Though peas contain no toxic content, yet they should be given in a limited quantity. To be more precise, a couple of times per week would be good enough. The most important thing that you have to keep in mind is moderation.

If everything should be done in the limit, then there won’t be any issue, if not, then there are chances that your cat can get sick. So, you have to make sure that peas should be included in its daily food.

Occasional feeding is absolutely fine, and it won’t harm the cat as well. You have to focus on meat rather than vegetables because cats are not herbivorous, instead, they belong to the ‘cat family’ where the likes of ‘Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Jaguar and Cheetah’ are there.

If possible, then avoid giving peas to cats, or if you want to give it, then make sure that it is in a very limited quantity.
